Mud Swallows Mess Up Boat Dock Near Home in San Diego, California

We have had a mud swallow problem for the last few years at our vacation home in San Diego, California. We have a small boat dock along the beach for our speedboat. The dock is made of steel beams for support and the birds have been nesting there. We hardly did any boating last year because they were so protective of the dock that we couldn't even get to the boat without being attacked! The dock and beach below were also covered with massive amounts of bird droppings, not a place that you want to "hang out."

We removed 15 of the nests last year, not realizing that they were protected. It is just about time for them to come back this year and we want to do anything we can to prevent them from nesting here again.

We contacted a professional mud swallow control technician and he came out within a few days. We told him that we didn't know that it was illegal to remove the nests that we took them down last year and were nervous he might report us or something.

He said that it was not wrong of us to knock down the nests because at the time (around September) the birds were grown and had already left the nest. However, it is illegal to remove a nest with eggs or babies inside. He said we had to wait until the babies are old enough to leave the nest.

The technician applied a special three-part repellant to the steel beams of the dock. This special repellent is supposed to bother the mud swallows enough that they do not want to build their nests in the area.

It has been a few weeks now; when the mud swallows came back to try to build their nests here again then they checked things out for awhile and then flew away!
